The all-conqueror from South Africa

Armormax from South Africa is converting the robust Land Cruiser 79 into a three-axle vehicle. The 6x6 with V8 turbodiesel and 261 hp is not only extreme off-road.

Armormax uses the Toyota Land Cruiser J79 pick-up as a basis, which can be converted into a single or double cab. The 4.5-liter V8 turbodiesel 1VD FTV is used as an ideal mix between robustness, performance and tolerable fuel consumption, which in its original state provides 430 Newton meters and 205 hp. At Armormax he gets a performance treatment that, in addition to 261 hp maximum power, is particularly impressive with the maximum torque of 710 Nm.

For the 6×6 conversion, Armormax has developed its own transfer case to drive the second rear axle, the housing of which is milled from one piece. A gear transmission is used to transmit power, which is significantly more robust and reliable than chain-driven variants used by other 6×6 converters. The drive section is completed by an automatic transmission from the German supplier ZF that was specially developed for the TC-6. The eight-speed automatic ZF8HP90 can handle up to 1,000 Nm of torque and impresses with its extreme robustness.

Enormous axle articulation

The rear rigid axles are attached to a subframe; Armormax relies on robust and easy-to-maintain leaf springs. Despite this technology, the interlocking of the two rear axles is enormous, as we show in the picture gallery. Armormax does not use transverse stabilizers; the three axles should reduce the tendency to roll sufficiently. In addition, the rear frame cross member is significantly reinforced so that it can pull the heaviest loads without damage.

Enormous range in off-road use is also guaranteed. A double tank system with a total capacity of 300 liters is used as standard. If you want to be deployed in the middle of nowhere for several weeks, you can install tanks with a volume of up to 610 liters. This also illustrates the load capacity of the vehicle, which is designed for a load of up to two tonnes. Overall, the TAC-6 can boast a maximum permissible total weight of seven tons – that depends on how safe customers want to feel in the Toyota. The security classes can be varied here, from the standard model without special protection to “discrete” B6 armor to full armor according to STANAG Level 1.

Armormax converts the J79 into a 6×6 in both right- and left-hand drive models. The basic conversion costs 53,442 euros before taxes; If you want the fine, specially made ZF automatic transmission instead of the standard transmission with a reinforced clutch, you will have to invest a further 18,219 euros. The armoring measures start at 35,169 euros net.

Conclusion

Instead of show and ostentation, Armor Max focuses on utility and ultra-robust technology in the 6×6 conversion of the Toyota Land Cruiser. The spectacular appearance comes naturally, even without armor and the optional weaponry on the roof.
